MICHAEL W. ELLISON received his B.A. degree in Chemistry and Philosphy, cum laude in Philosophy, in 1985 from Cornell University.  During several summers while at Cornell, he conducted research at The Institute of Materials Science of the University of Connecticut and at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  He received his J.D. degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1989.  Also in 1989, he received his M.A. degree in Philosophy from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan.

In 1989, Mr. Ellison joined the international law firm of Latham & Watkins, where he was a member of the Litigation Department.  In January of 1996, Mr. Ellison left Latham & Watkins and joined the firm now known as Smith ♦ Ellison.

Mr. Ellison has been involved in and responsible for handling civil and business litigation matters in numerous federal and state courts.  His areas of experience include business torts, contracts, securities fraud, antitrust, eminent domain, franchisor-franchisee disputes, consumer class actions, collection, fraud, unfair business practices, insurance coverage and bad faith, and other complex litigation.

Mr. Ellison is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in California, and has also practiced before the United States District Courts for the District of Nevada, District of Massachusetts, Eastern District of Missouri, Western District of Missouri, Northern District of New York, and Northern District of Texas.  He is a member of the State Bar of California, the Orange County Bar Association, the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Celtic Bar Association.  He has served as Chair of the Orange County Bar Association's Pro Bono Committee, and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Ethics Committee of the ABA/YLD.  In addition to his full time practice of law, Mr. Ellison has also served as Adjunct Professor of Philosophy of Law at California State University, Long Beach.
